HSE Special Care Unit, Crannog Nua, Portrane, Co. Dublin


The building is specifically designed to facilitate the operational needs and functional requirements for a young person “secure” environment; together with general and public access needs associated with the supporting activities involved in organising the treatment, care and development of children with challenging behaviour, lawfully detained under High Court Order on welfare grounds.The development consists of the construction of a new 2-storey buildings comprising:
Ground Floor:
Reception, waiting, consultation and family rooms, bedrooms and bathrooms, classrooms, dining room, entertainment rooms, kitchen, staff rooms, store rooms, ancillary rooms and services areas.
First Floor:
Fully independent plant rooms.
The building complex can be viewed as having two distinct operating functions:
i) Controlled areas – i.e. accommodation associated with the “institutional” aspects of detention and welfare of children;
ii) Non-controlled areas – i.e. accommodation associated with the noninstitutional aspects of the general “front of house” i.e. administration and reception areas. New Buildings also included extensive mechanical and electrcial installations
The project also included retro fit and refurbishment works to existing buildings e.g. replacement of doors, works to existing roof structures, alteration works including the formation of opes to existing structures, internal finishes and installation of electrical and mechanical services and associated works
